Victoria Mamguqsualuq, Fishing weir scene with winged spirit and wolves
stroud, felt and embroidery floss, 51 1/16 x 70 in. (130 x 178 cm)
This beautifully executed wall hanging is a tour de force. The bottom half shows Inuit spearing fish in a fishing weir, cleaning them, and carrying their catch home. The top half shows a fantasy hunt, featuring wolves and a mysterious winged spirit. Victoria Mamnguqsualuq, a distinguished Inuit textile artist in her own right, is the daughter of Jessie Oonark, the foremost Baker Lake artist.

Eva Talooki Aliktaluk, Mother and child, c. 1980-1989
Stone, beads, 4 3/4 x 3 1/4 x 3 1/4 in. (12.1 x 8.3 x 8.3 cm)
Talooki's beadwork ranges from a few simple strands in some cases to highly elaborate clothing and adornments that have the look almost of royal regalia or liturgical vestments. In an example like this, the beadwork is not mere trimming, it becomes the defining characteristic of the work.
